Plumas County Fire Departments

An overview of the Fire Departments in Plumas County - see choices on menu.

There are 21 local government agencies or homeowners groups in Plumas County with responsibility for local fire protection. However, this number drops to 17 when considering actual stand-alone fire departments, since four of these organizations contract for fire services through other agencies. These include Prattville-Almanor, contracted with West Almanor CSD for management services; Hamilton Branch FPD, contracted with Peninsula FPD for management services; C Road CSD, contracted for fire and management services with Eastern Plumas Rural FPD; and Gold Mountain CSD, contracted with the City of Portola FD for fire services.

In addition, the U.S. Forest Service provides Wildland fire services through Plumas National Forest, and Cal FIRE maintains a presence in the County with a Quincy based Fire Prevention Captain, part-time inspectors, and assistance with fire prevention and vegetation management projects initially through the State Responsibility Area (SRA) fee.

Types of Fire Departments or Agencies with fire protection responsibilities organized by Governance:

Fire Protection Districts (FPD) - Beckwourth, Crescent Mills, Eastern Plumas Rural, Graeagle, Hamilton Branch, La Porte, Meadow Valley, Peninsula, Prattville-Almanor, Quincy, Sierra Valley.

Community Service Districts (CSD) - C-Road, Gold Mountain, Greenhorn Creek, Indian Valley, Long Valley, Plumas Eureka, West Almanor CSD's.

Public Utility District (PUD) - Chester.

City (incorporated) - City of Portola FD.

Homeowners Association (HOA) - Bucks Lake VFD.

Federal Responsibility Areas (FRA) - U.S. Forest Service, Plumas National Forest.

State (Fire prevention and special projects staffing, based in Quincy) - Cal FIRE, within Lassen Modoc Plumas Ranger Unit. First response fire suppression to State Responsibility Areas (SRA) is via an agreement with the US Forest Service, in exchange for Cal FIRE coverage of USFS FRA lands in some other areas in the state.
