Reflective Address Signs Help Emergency Responders Find Your Home

When you call 911, every second matters. Firefighters, EMS personnel, law enforcement, and other emergency responders need to be able to quickly identify your home or property—especially at night, during bad weather, or when visibility is reduced by smoke, darkness, or other conditions.

A reflective address sign placed where it can be easily seen from the road can make it much easier for emergency responders to find you.

Take a look at your address from the road.
Can you clearly see your address:
  • During the daytime?
  • At night?
  • From both directions of travel?
  • When approaching your driveway?
  • If your driveway is long, shared, or difficult to identify?
If the answer is no, it is time to improve your address visibility.

Local Options Are Available Across Plumas County. Several Plumas County fire departments and Firewise communities offer reflective address signs directly to local residents.

Quincy Fire Department -  📞 530-283-0870
Peninsula Fire Protection District 📞 530-259-2306

Long Valley Fire Department 📞 775-771-9803✉️ [email protected]
Meadow Valley Fire Department - ✉️ [email protected]
Beckwourth Peak Fire Protection District - 📞530-832-1008
West Almanor Fire Department 📞 (530) 259-5112 ✉️ [email protected]

Check with your local fire department or Firewise community first.
They know the specific needs and conditions in your area and may offer reflective address signs, installation, or guidance on the best way to mark your property.

If a local program isn't available in your area, there are online companies that sell reflective address signs  that can be ordered directly by homeowners.

Where Should Your Address Be Posted?

A visible address on your building is important, but that isn't always enough.
If your home cannot be clearly seen from the public road, an additional address marker at the driveway or access point may help responders locate the property.
This is particularly important when:
  • Your driveway is long or difficult to see.
  • Multiple homes share a driveway.
  • Your home is accessed from a different road than the address assigned to the property.
  • Your driveway is on a private or unnamed road.
  • There are multiple driveways close together.
  • A driveway or access road forks and it isn't obvious which direction leads to your home.
In these situations, additional address or directional signs can help guide emergency responders to the correct location.

Make Your Address Easy to See
For the best visibility, address numbers should:
Be clearly visible from the road
Contrast with their background
Be large enough to read from a distance
Be visible at night
Be placed where vegetation, snow, vehicles, or other objects won't block them

Reflective numbers and signs are especially helpful because they can be seen when illuminated by headlights or emergency vehicle lighting. The size of letters, numbers, and symbols for street address signs are required to be reflective, minimum 4” height, one-half inch stroke, contrasting with the background color of the sign, arabic numerals, visible from both directions of travel - per County Code Chapter 8 Section 9-8.404

Make Your Address Visible. Help Us Find You.
A few dollars and a few minutes today can help emergency responders find you when every second counts.
