Getting people out of mangled vehicle wrecks...

We have multiple highways that wind through Plumas County. In addition there are hundreds of miles of both paved and dirt roads that attract varying types of motor vehicles for travel or play. We do have fairly regular wrecks unfortunately. Most are minor, some are major. The reasons for the wrecks are many, including such varied causes as not paying attention to the driving, perhaps glancing at a cell phone, and going off the road, or striking or swerving to avoid obstacles that include fallen rocks, debris, or animals.

Excessive speed for driving conditions, especially in ice and snow are other contributing factors.
The increasing popularity of off-road vehicles, including ATV's, dirt bikes, and snowmobiles, also results in occasional wrecks. Sometimes the drivers and occupants are not injured, and other times suffer a range of damage. Every now and then they are trapped in or under the vehicle, and may require extrication from trained and equipped fire department responders.

The skills of extrication range from simple to complex, and may or may not involve the use of basic or complex tools. This week we have posted some photos documenting a recent 16-hour state fire training program on auto extrication.

On Rebuilding Used Fire Engines...

11/6/2016

In our last blog we mentioned one of the many options for local fire departments to upgrade their fire engines is to participate in the Federal "Excess Property" long-term loan program. Let's take a closer look at an example in Quincy.

This week we have posted another story from the "Inside the Fire House column in Plumas News, originally published in early 2013. This tells an amazing story about some talented firefighters putting in hundreds of hours to
rehabilitate and upgrade a 20-year old US Forest Service Engine that was declared "excess property." While most fire departments can't perform this level of a rebuild, it's still a great story featuring a department with a "can-do" attitude.

"I think a hero is an ordinary individual who finds strength to persevere and endure in spite of overwhelming obstacles."      - Christopher Reeve
